The Tahfiz Program at SMIAA (the Tahfiz) was initiated by the Parents & Teachers Association (PTA) of the SMIAA in July 2004 with the objective of enabling students of SMIAA who have the capability and aptitude to be Al-Quran Hufaz to be trained and guided by capable instructors to be a huffaz while at the same time undergoing the regular education program of the SMIAA.

The first intake was 16 students and the teachers were from the existing SMIAA’s pool of teachers and part timers hired from the outside. The Tahfiz was initially fully funded by the PTA but later, due to the high running cost, students were charged RM100 per month and entrance fee of RM300.

The Tahfiz—an Added Value to SMIAA

Students of the Tahfiz are typically those who are excellent all-rounder student. Despite tight schedule, the Tahfiz students tend to maintain an excellent academic standing, the top 10 percentile group in the overall academic assessment. Most of them are also active members in non-academic, co-curriculum activities inside and outside the school. This is so much so that they are perceived by other students as the elite group in the school.

Eight months after the formation of the Tahfiz, in February 2006, the school sent three (3) students in a tahfiz competition organised by the International Islamic School. The students, Adibah Parman and Abdullah Hafidz, emerged as champions under the memorisation category of three (3) and four (4) juz respectively, and Mohammad Amir Saifuddin was the second runner up under the memorisation category of two (2) juz.

Limited Resources

As it approached its second year of operation, due to new intakes, the Tahfiz classes had grown considerably. The pool of capable students interested to participate in the Tahfiz was bigger than the available resources. Since the Tahfiz has limited resources, some of the aspiring students were turned away.

Al-Huffaz Methodology

The Tahfiz sessions are conducted using the Systematic Al-Huffaz Methodology and Rasm Uthmani Al Quran. The memorization sessions are divided into the following activities:

Hifz: Also known as the new memorization session and normally conducted in the morning.

Tasmi’: Also known as the memory reinforcement session and normally conducted in the morning as well.

Muraja’ah: Also known as the memory perfection session and normally conducted in the afternoon.
